Create a "Pop & Rotate" Card!

Updated: Jul 30, 2023

Hello, thanks for joining me today while looking for some inspiration!

Today I want to share a card that I call the "Pop & Rotate" card. It's amazing how a simple mechanism can create such movement. I have created a free printout, be sure to print on an 8.5x11" letter size paper. The printout includes the mechanism and score marks that you will need. As well as a ring and some strips of paper. Just print and cut them out.

The mechanism is designed for a 4.25 x 5.5" card that opens from the side lengthwise in the landscape

position. Once you have printed the mechanism and other pieces out, begin by scoring your mechanism on the dashed score lines. After that is completed go ahead and fold and burnish those folds. I folded and burnished in both directions for maximum moveability using 80lb cardstock. When finished you will have two triangles that you will push in and that caused the mechanism to fold in onto itself creating an arrowhead shape. Then the flap at the end gets folded up towards the point of the arrow. (see photo A.)

After you have finished the inside of your cards background to your liking you will glue the right-hand side flap under the arrowhead towards the center of the card, making sure that the left-hand side of the mechanism is right up next to the fold of the card without causing the card difficulty in closing.

Now, slide the ring onto the mechanism, with the left side of the ring on top. Take the .5" strips of cardstock

or acetate and glue two ends together creating an L shape with the 3" strip on the left and the 2.5" strip on the bottom. (see photo B.) You will now cut a slight angle in the top of the 1.5" strip the direction of the fold in the mechanism and glue it to bottom of the mechanism. And glue the L shape to the top of the mechanism. (see photo C.)

Glue the ring onto the 1.5" strip. See D.

Make sure that your mechanism is in the closed or "arrow" position, you can now add glue to the left side of the mechanism and close the card. Wait for it to dry before opening the card. (try to resist!) :)

Now you are ready to add your elements!

Be sure that the element that you have for the ring is large enough to cover the ring. Add glue to only the right side of the ring when adding your element. When adding elements to the L shape be sure that they will not interfere with the card folding and that it is not sticking out of the card when it is closed. The same thing goes for the bottom element as well, you don't want it to stick out past the bottom of the card when it is open. Otherwise, you won't be able to stand it up properly to display it.

If you get frustrated, take a break and come back to it later. Always test your mechanism to make sure that everything is moving properly.
